HMS HOOD Firing her guns

HMS HOOD Firing a full Broadside of her main armament. I wanted to go outside of my comfort zone and try to capture the action as the guns fire. The speed of the main explosion, the intense force leaving the barrels while at the same time the shockwave hits the surface of the sea.

HMS Hood was sunk during the Battle of the Denmark Straite in May of 1941.  80 Years ago HMS Hood,  the pride of the Royal Navy was sunk within minutes, leaving behind only 3 survivors.

I have never seen a good photograph of her firing her main armament. This consisted of eight 42 calibre BL 15-inch Mk1 Guns in four Hydraulically powered twin turrets. They were capable of firing 1920-pound shells up to a max distance of 30,180yrds.

My main inspiration came from seeing other large warships firing and lighting up the sky. I wanted to capture the split second when this happened.  The ship changing from shades of Grey to Shades of Orange and Yellow, just for a split second before the flames gave way to thick smoke. Most paintings of warships are dark by nature, I aimed to have a creation full of colour this time. I’m happy with the result.

Bismarck and Prinz Eugen .’Rheinubung’ was the operation name given to the breakout into the North Atlantic by two German warships . Bismarck was a new battleship . Along with the Battlecruiser Prinz Eugen they had the potential to decimate the allied shipping convoys . Rheinubung was nearly successful until they were seen and met by the Royal Navy in the form of Hood and the Prince of Wales . Within minutes of meeting, Hood was sunk after exploding. Prince of Wales made smoke and departed for safety. Afterward,  Prinz Eugen went alone into the North Atlantic .The Bismarck made for the safety of  occupied France to have repairs done .

To show what the scene possibly looked like the night they left the safety of Scapa Flow in May 1941

WWII May of 1941 , HMS Hood , HMS Prince of Wales and six Destroyers were sent by the Admiralty into the North Atlantic to hunt down and destroy the German Battleship Bismarck and the Prinz Eugen .In the days that followed was one of the most famous naval encounters of the Second World War. The Hood was sunk within minutes when they met in the Denmark Strait . The Prince of Wales was damaged and fled to safety . Bismarck had been hit but was ok . The Prinz Eugen departed for the North Atlantic after the encounter to destroy the allied convoys of supplies to the UK .  A large part of the Royal Navy was then ordered to hunted down the Bismarck and she too ended up on the sea bed . Both ships suffered immense loss of life . They both took their place in history. After weeks of research I have depicted HMS Hood and the other ships of the Royal Navy leaving Scapa Flow at the beginning of their fate with Destiny .
